Ukraine’s President Zelensky in a speech to the nation called for “clear and effective support from the West” after Russia exacerbated the conflict with Ukraine last night by recognizing Ukraine’s renegade regions of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent people’s republics. Zelensky calls that recognition “a violation of the sovereign and territorial integrity” of Ukraine. Eyewitnesses, meanwhile, have already sighted the first military column of Putin’s so-called “peacekeepers” on the Donetsk border. The UN Security Council, chaired by Russia, will meet in emergency session tonight while the EU, the US and the UK, among others, prepare sanctions against Russia.
