On Saturday (June 28, 2025), punk rapper Bobby Vylan on the West Holts Stage of the Glastonbury Festival sparked a wave of outrage. With politically charged messages and explicit criticism of international institutions, the musician from the duo Bob Vylan made it clear where he was. In an environment that is characterized by political tensions and criticism of the events in the Gaza Strip, Vylan chose drastic words to illustrate his point of view.
“Free Palestine” to “Death to the IDF”
While Bob Vylan was on stage, the duo had slogans project on the screen behind them. Among them: “Free Palestine – the United Nations call it genocide – the BBC calls it ‘conflict'”.
When the audience agreed to repeated “Free Palestine” calls, Bobby Vylan himself reached the microphone and called for a chanted “Death to the IDF”. A conviction of the Israeli forces in the context of continuing violence in the Gaza Strip. He said: “We are not a pacifist punks at Bob Vylan Enterprises. We are violent punks. Because some people only understand messages through confrontation.”
After the gig, many people were shaken because of these murder fantasies. They describe the rapper as anti -Semitic. Recordings of Palestine flags swinging spectators go around the world. The Glastonbury bosses meanwhile made it unequivocally clear that they are against hatred, agitation and misanthropy.
BBC, KNECAP and reactions: The political undertone of the festival
At the same time, the BBC has deleted the planned transmission of the Irish Rap Group Kneecap. A decision that provided additional discussion material. While Kneecap later expressed political statements on stage, it was primarily Vylan’s speech that caused a wave of reactions.
The Glastonbury Festival published a statement after the performance. One is “horrified” about the call “Death to the IDF”. The organizers emphasized that freedom of expression should not be confused with the approval of Hass speech. “There is no space for anti -Semitism, hatred or calls for violence on Glastonbury.”
Vylan’s daughter as a “source of inspiration”
Bobby Vylan reflected in a subsequent Instagram post. Under the title “I Said What I Said”, he explained that his daughter had inspired him. She recently expressed her opinion on healthier food and culturally more diverse dishes at school. An expression of self -confidence and political thinking at a young age that Vylan interpreted as a glimmer of hope.
He emphasized how crucial it was to encourage young people to stand up for changes. “If our own flame of the protest threatens to expire under the burden of adulthood, we have to show the children how to ignite them again – loud, visible and determined,” he wrote. What begins with school meals today can affect global foreign policy tomorrow.
He did not say a word about his calls to the murder, as he fueled the crowd at the Glastonbury Festival.
Political reactions and criminal examination
The reactions from politics were not long in coming after the concert. Cabinet Minister Wes Streeting sharply criticized the appearance and asked both the BBC and the festival for education. At the same time, however, he also expressed criticism of the Israeli government. The escalation by “Israeli settler terrorists” must also be addressed.
The Avon and Somerset police announced an investigation. Both Bob Vylans and Kneecaps appearances should be checked for possible criminal content.
Context: The Gaza War and Global Protests
Since the Hamas attack on the Supernova Music Festival in October 2023, in which 1,195 people were killed, Israel has had a major military offensive in the Gaza Strip. According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, over 56,000 Palestinians have so far been killed. The United Nations classifies Israeli military actions as potential genocide. Israel categorically rejects this assessment.
Bobby Vylan has positioned himself with his statement. His appearance is not only musically remembered. But as part of an increasingly politicized festival culture, the stage and protest.
