Lang broker Erwin van Waterschoot does not have to think about one of the most beautiful places in Steenbergen. He is standing next to the vacant farm complex at Doktersdreefje 2 and looks towards the huge Sint-Gummaruskerk. “I am genuinely surprised how beautiful this church is. Side each other, they at least form a beautiful duality.”

The farm complex dates from 1895. For a long time there was a notary’s office in the monumental building. The notaries recently relocated to new construction. The municipal monument is now for sale for 550,000 euros.

“The building is owned by the Woningkwartier housing corporation. It has a double destination: living and working. That is the reason that the building is sold at Doktersdreefje 2,” says Van Waterschoot van Van Wensmakelaars. “It is hoped that someone will come who actually feels the love for such a building.”

There are sufficient interested parties for the municipal monument. “It is mainly people who want to maintain or bring back the old characteristics,” says Van Waterschoot. “The facade of the building is really interesting. It stands out because of its detailed characteristics. Moreover, we are in the center of Steenbergen. The buildings around the farm complex are based on the architecture of the farm. For example, the ‘servants’ homes and the shed with apartments. That is the icing on the cake.”

According to the broker, the building is not only interesting from the outside. The entrance with a stately hall with high ceilings and lots of stained glass from the old Steenbergen is still completely intact. For example, the characteristic elements are still alternated with suspended ceilings. “Some interested parties think it’s fantastic and may want to reduce the old atmosphere. A little more home and a little less office. Also in the field of sustainability.”

The building is a municipal monument and they have no label obligation. “The hood of the house is insulated. In certain places in the building, additional windows and walls have been placed.”

According to the broker, the building does not complain about interest. “We have had people for fully living for themselves. But parents with adult children are also interested in, for example, turning it into a generation home. Moreover, there is interest in combining living and working in the building.”

The new residents of the farm complex can in any case receive enough guests. “There are no fewer than eight bedrooms in the building, two of which are in the attic section. On the ground floor you end up in a spacious living room from the stately entrance. The two old fireplaces in the room are ample enough to heat the living room in the winter.”
