Third Super-G, third winner: The Swiss Franjo von Allmen triumphs in Wengen. The traded top favorites have no chance.

The third Super-G of the winter in front of a dream backdrop in Wengen took an unexpected turn, as a Swiss man quickly turned the team’s internal hierarchy on its head: Franjo von Allmen, with the early start number three, set a best time that all the following riders fought hard on .

Two Swiss on the podium

Neither the later runner-up Vincent Kriechmayr (Austria/+0.10 seconds) nor the veterans Dominik Paris (Italy/+0.63) or Mattia Casse (+0.92), who somewhat surprisingly won the second Super-G of the winter in Val Gardena had won, came close to the time of the young Swiss.

The 23-year-old had a dream run and thus underlined his reputation as the shooting star of the season. Behind von Allmen and Kriechmayr, another Swiss rider, Stefan Rogentin (+0.58), made it onto the podium.

Marco Odermatt with the beaten ones – Romed Baumann follows behind

Even top favorite Marco Odermatt couldn’t beat his compatriot’s time. And not even close. After a good start, the overall World Cup winner made a mistake in the so-called Kernen-S. Afterwards he risked too much and drove well outside the ideal line several times. The result: 1.04 seconds behind von Allmen and a disappointing seventh place for him in the final results.

As one of only two Germans, Romed Baumann with start number 34 was able to keep up with the best in the upper section of the route. After the second intermediate time, more and more small mistakes crept in, which ultimately added up to a gap of 2.43 seconds to the winner. That wasn’t enough for a place in the top 30.

This also applies to youngster Luis Vogt, who, however, had no realistic chance of a good placement with the high number 53. At the finish, the man from Garmisch was 3.23 seconds behind – even though he was able to keep up at least in some sections of the route.

Von Allmen “speechless” – Kriechmayr: Form curve points upwards

“This is really unbelievable. I can’t quite realize it yet and I’m speechless”said von Allmen after his first World Cup victory at the Sportschau microphone. But Vincent Kriechmayr can also count himself among the winners: “There’s still some time until the World Cup. But at least the form is showing a bit of improvement”said the Austrian. On the way to the home World Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, the 33-year-old still has the Lauberhorn downhill race on Saturday and the highlight in Kitzbühel ahead of him.

Dominik Paris summarized: “I tried to accelerate. That’s why today was a very good step in the right direction and despite the mistake, it was close to the podium.”
