Despite a cushion of only five points over the relegation zone, VfL Bochum is planning for the coming season. The focus is on the offensive, as numerous loanees are leaving the club. According to a “WAZ” report, third division top scorer Berkan Taz from SC Verl is very popular with the second division club.

Taz moved from Waldhof Mannheim to Verl on a free transfer in January 2024, where he has been one of the top performers ever since. Last season, the attacking midfielder contributed 13 goals and 14 assists in 37 league games – no third division professional collected more scorers. This season, the Berlin native went one better and after 34 match days he has 33 goal involvements – another record. Taz is one of the main reasons why Verl has the best attack in the 3rd division with 74 goals. These numbers brought him to the attention of those responsible in Bochum.

Taz’s contract ends in the summer and he could therefore come to VfL on a free transfer. In the TM rumor mill, the German-Turk is also being traded at SC Paderborn; according to the report, several second division clubs and teams from abroad are interested in him. There have already been initial discussions with trainer Uwe Rösler, Simon Zoller and Markus Brunnschneider. Taz’s wish is to move to the 2nd Bundesliga.

Update April 23, 8:39 p.m.: At “Reviersport” Taz now commented on his future. “If we win all four games with Verl, I’m sure that we can at least achieve relegation. I can then definitely imagine staying in the 2nd league with Verl. I’ll take my time with the decision,” said Taz and added in relation to the transfer rumors: “I’ve already sat down with a few clubs and those responsible. There will be a few conversations to come. So far all the conversations have been very interesting and characterized by mutual appreciation. I liked that.” He did not name the club names, but according to the report, in addition to Bochum, Arminia Bielefeld, 1. FC Magdeburg and SV Elversberg are also said to be interested. The trail to Paderborn, however, has gone cold. A move abroad could also become an issue. “In the best case” in the LaLiga, that is his “dream”.

There will be a lot of movement in VfL Bochum’s offense in the summer. Midfielder Francis Onyeka (Bayer Leverkusen), striker Callum Marshall (West Ham United) and winger Farid Alfa-Ruprecht (Bayer Leverkusen) are returning to their parent clubs. Taz could fill the resulting gap.
