Thief stole ‘the digital life’ of Nathan (28): “With photos of my deceased mother”

“My mother died four years ago and everything about her was on the laptop.” 28-year-old Nathan Zola was brutally robbed of his belongings in Alkmaar this week. These items are financially valuable, but above all very precious.

At Alkmaar Central tells Nathan exactly what happened. “I just came from Rotterdam and went to visit my father in Alkmaar, my hometown.” As always, he parked the car in the yard in the Bomenwijk, takes his bag from the car and walks inside.

After the visit, he got back into the car and put his bag back on the back seat as usual. Then it went wrong. “I thought: I’m going to pee for a while.” It only lasted a minute, but Nathan has never regretted a pee so much.

The 60 seconds were enough for the perpetrator to make off with his bag containing the laptop, a fast charger, a book and an external hard drive. “At first I didn’t think the laptop had been stolen. I really started to doubt myself, I was 1000% sure I had put the bag in the back seat.”

After searching in and around the house for a while, he realized that it wasn’t a mistake, but that the bag had been stolen. “The door of my car was also open.”

“My disc was in my bag to make an extra copy of it at work”

Nathan about backup

Nathan doesn’t care that the laptop itself is gone, “it’s still for sale”. The data on the laptop is very precious to him. Exactly the reason to always make a backup, Nathan understands that very well.

“My disc was in my bag to make an extra copy at work.” Exactly on the day he wants to make the backup, the laptop is stolen. “It’s really bad luck.” Also the ‘Find My Macfunction has been disabled by someone, according to Nathan.

Former alderman of Alkmaar

The biggest loss are the photos and videos of his mother. “My mother passed away four years ago. I’ve lost everything about her.” Nathan’s mother, Mirjam Hamberg, is not entirely unknown in Alkmaar. She was a former alderman and deputy mayor.

And the loss of his mother’s digital history isn’t the only precious thing gone now. Nathan is very busy with music and more than 15 years of his work has also disappeared in one fell swoop. “The impact of it is so huge. If I don’t get it back, I can forget it. Then I’m just done.”

Information from the perpetrator

Nathan drove around for hours on Tuesday and went door to door in the hope of finding some information about the perpetrator. The only result is a video from a neighbor’s security camera. It shows a suspicious man checking the neighbor’s car. Nathan files a report and is told that they are ‘working on it’, what exactly this means is not clear.

In any case, they tell him not to do ‘forensic investigation’, since it is not a serious crime. Also when we ask for information we get the formal answer: “We are not allowed to give this.”

“I don’t know what kind of situation the person who did this is in and why he did this”

Nathan left

For the time being, it does not appear that there is a thief active in the neighborhood. According to a police press officer, no further reports of theft have recently been received in relation to the Bomenwijk.

Nathan wants his laptop to turn up again as soon as possible and therefore decides to get started himself by reading the news via Alkmaar Central and social media spread.

Despite the frustration and disappointment, Nathan is not angry. “I don’t know what kind of situation the person who did this is in and why he did this. But he needs to know that the impact is very big.” Nathan is even willing to help the perpetrator if the situation lends itself to it, as long as his laptop comes back.
