“They made a devil out of her”: lawyers mother and stepfather of Raul (9) speak, jury decides today on guilt and punishment

The fifth and final day of the trial in the case surrounding 9-year-old Raul started today at the Ghent Assize Court. The boy died in 2023 after prolonged torture by his mother Ioana-Maria Micu (33) and stepfather Nicusor Nati Ciurcui (37). They are on trial for torture resulting in death. Yesterday, the Public Prosecution Service and the lawyers of the civil parties spoke. They were particularly harsh on the two defendants and spoke of “torture of the highest degree”. Today the defense will make oral arguments, after which the jury will deliberate on the guilt and later also on the sentence. Follow all developments via our live blog.
