These women from Groningen and Drenthe have been nominated for a Woman in the Media Award

Twenty women from Groningen and Drenthe have been nominated for the Woman in the Media Award 2023.

This election has been organized for the fifteenth (and last) time by speakers agency ZijSpreekt and expert database Vaker in de Media (VIDM). They want to encourage female experts and role models to be visible in the media and encourage editors to offer them that platform more often.

Online voting

Women could be nominated until December 20 of the previous year. A regional jury made a selection for each province, where now voted online for two weeks can become. The regional jury then chooses a winner from the three nominees with the most votes. The results will be announced on February 19.

Each provincial winner receives a statue made by artist Ellen Buchwaldt. In addition, the provincial winner will be on the nomination list for the national Woman in the Media Award.

Nominated for the Woman in the Media Award 2023 Groningen:

  • Singer Izaline Calister. She performed during the commemoration of the history of slavery, where Willem-Alexander apologized. She’s standing in theaters now with the musical performance Tula and Juliet, about her great-grandmother born as a slave and Tula, the leader of the largest slave uprising in Curaçao;

  • Eva Dijkman. Local police officer in the Oosterpark district in Groningen. She is very active on social media, is considered very approachable, seeks connections in the neighborhood and organizes walk-in lunches;
  • Myrthe Hol from Haren. Professor and otolaryngologist from the UMCG, who made the news with a earplug promotion at Rammstein concerts in the City Park in Groningen and warnings against hearing damage;
  • Nienke Homan from Groningen. Former deputy who became chairman of the Royal Association of the Dutch Chemical Industry in 2023, the chemical interest group industry;

  • Léonie de Jonge from Groningen. Scientist who became important researcher in the field of the extreme right in the Netherlands;
  • Sanne Meijer from Roodeschool. Historian who always met new projects gets the media;
  • Desirée van Nieuwenhoven from Groningen. Author of the book Stillborn, initiator of the Day for the Stillborn Baby (June 2) and founder of The Stillborn Sisterhood, a platform for women dealing with stillbirth and miscarriage;
  • Iris Sommer. Psychiatrist, writer and professor of psychiatry. She is known for her research into… differences between the male and female brain. Wrote several (popular science) books;
  • Susan Top. Former secretary of the Groninger Gasberaad, who is g became deputy, with mining in its portfolio.

Nominated for the Woman in the Media Award 2023 Drenthe:

  • Alok van Loon from Geeuwenbrug. Secretary of the citizens’ initiative Measuring = Knowing, which stands up for the right of people, animals and nature to a healthy life living environment without pesticides;
  • Agnes Mulder from Assen. Former MP who identified himself as director of VNO-NCW MKB Noord commitment to energy, accessibility and employment in Drenthe and the North;
  • Annemiek Rens from Assen. Chief curator of the Drents Museum in Assen and initiator of Traveling with Vincent, an exhibition that offers a new perspective on Van Gogh’s time in Drenthe;

  • Chantal Schinkels from Zuidlaren. Social tech & e-commerce expert and author;
  • Susanne Schoemans from Beilen. Gz psychologist, who works with people with dementia with her contact dog Sibo;
  • Elke Battle from Assen. Member of parliament for GroenLinks, which is also known as a passionate midwife;
  • Eline Vedder from Ruinerwold. Dairy farmer and Member of Parliament for the CDA. She has been committed to a sustainable farming existence and a livable countryside for years;
  • Elke Wiss from Geeuwenburg. Practical philosopher and author of the book Socrates on Sneakers. Wiss draws attention in the media to listening, critical thinking and asking questions, instead of throwing out opinions;

  • Marijke Zaalberg from Westerbork. Founder of the To School Foundation in Haiti.

Last year, Daisy Veenstra, the rapping psychologist, won the Woman in the Media Award Groningen. Vera Vos from De Wijk, founder and designer of Passie op het Platteland, won in Groningen.
