At this year’s Academy Awards, recently deceased people from film and music were also honored in the “In Memoriam” segment. In the course of this, Lenny Kravitz performed and sang his song. In addition to greats like Jean-Luc Godard, Ray Liotta and Burt Bacharach, there were also two Germans: Wolfgang Petersen and Simone Bär.

Life and work of Wolfgang Petersen:

Simone Bear started out as an assistant director before working most of her career as a casting director. Most recently, she was involved in the four Oscar-winning film adaptation of “Nothing New in the West”. She has also worked with directors Tom Tykwer and Christian Petzold. In addition to the two successful German series “Dark” and “Babylon Berlin”, she also worked internationally for Hollywood productions set or filmed in Germany, for example for Wes Anderson’s “Grand Budapest Hotel”, Steven Spielberg’s “Companions” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Basterds”. She is said to have had a major impact on Daniel Brühl’s career. Bär died of cancer on January 16, 2023 in Berlin at the age of 57.

Wolfgang Petersen In 1981 he was responsible for directing and writing the film adaptation of “Das Boot”, which was very successful both in the USA and in Germany. After shooting several episodes of “Tatort” and the “Scandal” adaptation “Die Konfolge” in the 70s, he moved to Los Angeles in the 80s after his success. He also successfully filmed Michael Ende’s “The Neverending Story”, where he was also involved in the screenplay. 2004 followed with “Troja” one of his successful blockbusters and recognition in the USA. His films have been nominated for a total of 15 Oscars. On August 12, 2022, Petersen lost a battle with pancreatic cancer and passed away at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 81.
