Brian Johnson has presented the ten most important songs of his life. During the week of October 17-21, the AC/DC singer was a guest on the show Tracks Of My Years. As part of his guest appearance, Johnson presented two songs a day that have had a significant influence on him personally and musically and form “the soundtrack of his life”.

In the first episode, Johnson talks to host Ken Bruce about the two songs “Tutti Frutti” (Little Richard) and “Born To Be Wild” (Steppenwolf) (2:09 to 02:19). You can listen to the first episode of the show (from October 17th) here. Subsequent episodes will also be available online after they air.

Johnson learned to hand jive thanks to Little Richard’s Tutti Frutti

At the beginning of the show, Johnson discusses the influence of the Little Richard track “Tutti Frutti.” Coincidentally, Johnson, then just a little boy, had seen Little Richard perform on the BBC. According to the musician in an interview, little Johnson was very enthusiastic pretty quickly: “And there it was, the song. I was completely freaked out. It was possibly one of the most important songs I’ve ever heard. It was great. (…) I just wanted to go outside and sing the song really loud.”

In the interview, Johnson goes on to explain how Little Richard’s music brought him into the world of rock ‘n’ roll and thus to hand jive, a dance to rhythm and blues music.

“Everyone wanted to hear that song back then” – Johnson on “Born To Be Wild”

As the second groundbreaking track he names “Born To Be Wild” by Steppenwolf. “The song was easy to play and everyone wanted to hear it at the time. So we learned it and went on stage with it,” Johnson grins to host Ken Bruce.

Here is the tracklist for the whole week:

Little Richard – Tutti Frutti
Steppenwolf – Born To Be Wild
Black Sabbath-Paranoid
The Rolling Stones’ Jumpin’ Jack Flash
Led Zeppelin – Rock and Roll
Elvis Presley – Jailhouse Rock
Joe Walsh – Rocky Mountain Way
Dire Straits – Sultans Of Swing
