At the intersection between Parkdreef and Slootdreef in the Seghwaert district, there is a pole with a push button for pedestrians at a crossing. Normally you press this to turn the traffic light green. But here the traffic light is nowhere to be seen. How about that?

For our ‘mysteries’ section, the editors of Zoetermeer District regularly receive questions from Zoetermeer residents. Cindy Jahreis emails and asks: “You can wait here for the green light until you weigh an ounce. The traffic lights are missing. I don’t think they’ve ever been here and I’ve lived here for almost thirty years.”
Alarm bells are going off
The crossing with a zebra crossing is opposite the Seghwaert shopping center. Many local residents cross the busy road here to go home or do their shopping in the shopping center.
According to a spokesperson, there has indeed never been a traffic light at this location. Since 2016, there has been a pedestrian crossing (VOP) with a traffic sign and flashing lights to warn motorists of pedestrians crossing the road. And you activate those lights – precisely – with the push button on the pole.

Cross safely
At the pedestrian crossing there are two black and white posts on either side with L2 signs and a push button attached. These are traffic signs with a man on a zebra crossing. The plates have a fluorescent edge and orange lights on the corners.
When a pedestrian wants to cross and presses the push buttons, the orange lights on the traffic signs flash brightly to warn road traffic. According to the municipality, the attention signs work well. “We have received many positive responses in recent years.”
