Jef Huyghe from opposition party N-VA Plus, and previously fired as general director of Heuvelland, had filed a complaint with the Council for Election Disputes. He found that quite a few irregularities had happened in the elections in Heuvelland. The chairman of one polling station did not seem neutral and a bag of 350 ballot papers would not have been correctly closed on the way to the counting agency.
According to the Council, there were no evidence of fraud. But because the irregularities happened before counting, a simple recovery was not sufficient either. “An invalidation of the elections is the only means to achieve a correct, reliable election result and to restore confidence in the electoral result.”
