In their opening match of the World Cup, Ivory Coast beat Ecuador 1–0. One of the most interesting names on the team is a 19-year-old Yan Diomande.

The Leipzig striker opens up about the tragedy he faced a year ago on The Players’ Tribune. His sister Roxane Diomande died at only 15 years old because someone had put something in his drink during a party. Roxane Diomande never woke up.

– I don’t think I even cried the day I was told you were gone. I was just in shock… It was a nightmare, Diomande writes in a touching message.

– Then I still had feelings. Now I don’t feel anything anymore. It’s like I’m not even human. Since you died, I’ve just been completely empty.

The family has not received answers to what really happened. Diomande wants to play football for his sister’s memory.

Diomande played his first Bundesliga season in RB Leipzig last season. He scored 12 goals and assisted three during the season. He has been in the middle of transfer rumors and Liverpool and PSG are among others interested.
