The White House called the negotiations with Russia useful and frank

Negotiations between Russia and the United States on security guarantees were frank and direct. This was stated by National Security Adviser to the President of the United States Jake Sullivan during a briefing at the White House. Broadcast was conducted on Twitter.

“[Обсуждения] were helpful. They gave us and our allies food for thought, they gave Russia food for thought, ”said the adviser to the American president.

Sullivan also said that the United States intends to “think” everything and consult with allies and partners to develop a further strategy. He pointed out that the United States continues to support Ukraine, its people and territorial integrity, and in the negotiations Washington was honest about the consequences of a possible invasion of Ukraine.

Experts assessed the prospects for continuing Russia’s dialogue with the United States and NATO

In mid-December last year, Russia handed over to the United States draft agreements on security guarantees. They included a demand not to accept the republics of the former USSR into NATO, as well as to abandon military activities on the territory of Ukraine. NATO indicated that they could not compromise with Russia on this issue. Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted that in case of refusal, Moscow’s response could be “very different” and assured that he would make a decision based on the advice of military experts. His press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, called security guarantees “a matter of life and death.” The Foreign Ministry urged either to take Russia’s proposals seriously, or “to deal with a military-technical alternative.”
