Based on his current album Hurry Up Tomorrow, The Weeknd produced a film of the same name. Since May 14, it has been running in German cinemas and in the United States since May 16 – but the American box office in particular seems to take less money than hoped. The work proves to be a flop.
The Weeknd’s acting career is so moderate
In “Hurry Up Tomorrow”, the musician plays a fictional version of himself that has to deal with insomnia and mental problems. The Weeknd wrote the film in collaboration with Trey Edward Shults and Reza Fahim. In addition to Abel Tesfaye, as the artist is called with a bourgeois name, Barry Keoghan and Jenna Ortega can also be seen on the screen.
Your own movie is now The Weeknd’s second cinematic project. In 2023 he played one of the main roles in the “The Idol” series alongside Lily-Rose Depp. However, this was discontinued after the first season.
As “NME” reports, the film has so far only had a little more than $ 3.3 million in over 2000 US cinemas. The budget of “Hurry Up Tomorrow” is said to have been around $ 15 million (approximately 13.3 million euros). The work did not even make it into the top 5 and landed sixth behind “Final Destination: Bloodline” in sixth place in the currently most visited movies in the USA.

Although Tesfaye plays a fictional version of itself, some parallels can be drawn to the real world of the artist. In this way, an incident of 2022 is presented in the film, in which the musician at a concert in front of 80,000 spectators: losing his voice inside and the show then had to cancel. Apparently the voice problems did not come due to physical complaints, but through mental stress.
In a current interview with “Variety”, the 35-year-old explained that he learned to deal with failure and mistakes through the event. “Failure is caustic, but don’t be afraid of it. Accept it. This is the best school. You can’t fail in class. You just have to live your life, learn from it, and it will be better,” says Tesfaye.
Does the Weeknd soon no longer mean the Weeknd?
In January 2025, the Canadian released his current album hurry up Tomorrow. He ended his after-hour trilogy and teased again and again that it could be his last record. At least it seems at the moment as if a new project is not appearing under its well -known artist name, but under its bourgeois, Abel Tesfaye.
