The femicide of the former beauty queen Carolina Flores Gomez It became one of the most shocking cases in Mexico in April of this year, not only due to the brutality of the crime but also due to the massive dissemination of the video that recorded the crime and exposed a family plot crossed by tensions, omissions and suspicions. The 27-year-old model had been crowned Miss Teen Baja California in 2017 and in recent years had worked as an influencer.
On the 15th of this month she was murdered inside the apartment she shared with her husband, Alejandro Sánchez Herrera, in an exclusive neighborhood in Mexico City. According to the investigation, the main accused is his mother-in-law, Erika Maria Herrera63 years old, who shot him at close range inside the house. The crime had a peculiarity that quickly made it viral: it was recorded by a home camera installed to monitor the couple’s eight-month-old baby.
In the images, which were later leaked to the press and social networks, an everyday scene prior to the attack is observed. The mother-in-law has a brief exchange with the victim and follows her to the kitchen; Seconds later, multiple shots and Flores’ desperate screams are heard. Below is the moment after the crime. Faced with her son’s complaint—“What did you do, mom?”—the woman coldly replies: “Nothing, it made me angry,” a phrase that became emblematic of the case and multiplied public indignation.
In the cycle Another Lost Day by El Trece, Mario Pergolini He introduced the topic within his classic topical monologue, but he did so with an ironic approach that was immediately questioned. The driver recounted the crime almost as a theatrical narrative, including details such as the number of shots fired, in a tone that sought to generate impact through black humor. Agustín Aristarán also participated, with ironic interventions and comments that reinforced the relaxed tone in the face of an act of extreme violence. That combination was what triggered the negative reaction on social networks.
One of the most criticized points was precisely the contrast between the content—a femicide recorded on video—and the humorous treatment. On social networks, users pointed out that the driver “listed the shots” while making ironic comments, which was interpreted as a trivialization of the event. Other questions pointed out that the case was used as material for entertainment, without the context or sensitivity that the topic required. “Deep down I would be thinking, save me a gift for Mother’s Day,” Pergolini closed and added: “Two gifts, because the mother is going to be in yuta.”
Meanwhile, in Mexico the slogan #JusticeForCarolina. Feminist groups, users and public figures denounced the crudeness of the video and the naturalization of violence, while others questioned the dissemination of such sensitive images. The massiveness of the audiovisual record transformed the case into a symbol of gender violence in family environments, amplifying the social claim.
In parallel, the alleged perpetrator, Érika María Herrera, fled the scene immediately after the attack and has remained a fugitive since then. The Mexican Prosecutor’s Office issued an arrest warrant for femicide and requested the intervention of Interpol to locate him internationally, suspecting that he may have left the country or moved between different states.
The case also revealed a history of family conflict. According to testimonies from the victim’s mother, the relationship between Flores and her mother-in-law had been tense since the pregnancy and had deteriorated after the couple’s move to the Mexican capital at the end of 2025. Some versions indicate that the aggressor maintained a relationship of control over her son and resented the presence of her daughter-in-law, which would have led to an extreme episode of violence.
