For the third time, Spanbroeker Erik Groot is organizing a sheep herding championship in Hoogwoud. About 18 European countries will be participating this summer during the European International. “The competition is much tougher this time. The best floats come from each country.”

The scene is part of the European International, which can be seen in Hoogwoud for four days from the end of July. Organizer Erik Groot from Spanbroek, himself a renowned sheep herder and enthusiast, is proud of it. “This is the first edition and Hoogwoud has the scoop again, just like at the World Cup.”

From World Cup to European Championship

Because five years ago, the world’s top competed against each other during the ‘Sheep Herding World Championship’ in Hoogwoud. “That was a resounding success,” says Groot. “Last year the European Championship could not take place because of the corona virus. So I am happy that we can organize something again.”

No fewer than 135 shepherds – also known as handlers – and their border collies from eighteen different European countries are taking part in the event. From the Czech Republic to Switzerland.

From Zwolle to Ireland

The event will be held from July 20 to 24. The competition circuit – on the plots on the Koningspade – consists of twenty hectares. For example, a grandstand will be built that offers space for 300 spectators.

“And there is a fair, with about fifteen to twenty stalls. But also an oliebollen stall, hamburger joint and herring trolley. Spectators can even taste sheep ice cream. Everything has been thought of.”

What about the sheep, also known as ‘athletes’? “They come from Zwolle this year. About 300 pieces, a whole herd in top condition. And, oh yes, the jury comes from Ireland.”

In 2017 NH Nieuws was present at the World Sheep Herding World Championship:

Tourism

How a small village can be big. Because tourism in West Friesland is also getting a boost. Accommodations are already noticing that the championship is just around the corner. “There is enormous interest. The bookings are pouring in at camping sites and B&Bs”, says organizer Erik Groot from Spanbroek. “The Van der Valk hotel in Slootdorp is almost fully booked. Camping De Gouw also has many regular guests.”

Loud voice and good eyes

The performance promises to be a true spectacle. Every day 45 shepherds compete for qualification, 15 of them go through. The grand final is on Sunday. Groot’s formula for success?

“Herding sheep is not only about a loud voice and whistle. Good eyes are also very important, and the warmth and how it is with the tension. Everything has to come together. I will also participate this year”, Groot admits full of good courage . And that does him good as an enthusiast, since he missed the World Cup in 2017. “As a sacrifice for the event.”

During the week, admission is free. During the weekend, an entrance ticket costs five euros. “A small amount, intended to support the agricultural sector.”
