Within the framework of the last session of the Superior Council, the University of Buenos Aires decided to grant its highest honorary recognition to the Argentine artist Carlos Alberto Solari, Popularly known as “Indio Solari”, for his outstanding career and his fundamental contribution to popular culture. The house of higher education highlighted that, “with an artistic career spanning more than five decades, his extensive musical work has made him a central figure in Argentine and Latin American rock, as well as a prominent personality in the art and popular culture of our country.”
The singer, composer and lyricist, founder and emblematic voice of the group Patricio Rey and his Ricotta Rounds, and creative reference of The Air Conditioning Fundamentalistsis considered by the UBA Superior Council itself as the main reference for these artistic projects. Furthermore, the statement highlighted that Solari’s works constituted milestones of popular music and unique community experiences around his live performances.
The resolution also mentions the relevance of his discography, both with Patricio Rey and his Redonditos de Ricota – with albums like “Gulp!” (1985); “October” (1986); “A bayon for the idiotic eye” (1988); “Bang! Bang!… you’re done for” (1989); “The Fly and the Soup” (1991); “Wolf Loose, Lamb Tied” (1993); “Luzbelito” (1996), among others. Who, subsequently, has developed a prolific career with the group Los Fundamentalistas del Aire Aconditiono, with a series of studio albums that includes, among others: “The treasure of the innocents (bingo fuel)” (2004); “Porco Rex” (2007); “The Perfume of the Tempest” (2010); “Little birds, brave little boys” (2013), and “El ruiseñor, el amor y la muerte” (2018), as well as various live recordings and recent productions in audiovisual and digital formats.
Finally, the UBA highlighted that his lyrics are of notable poetic and symbolic density, and have been the subject of analysis from multiple academic perspectives. In the writing it was pointed out that the work has contributed to the construction of its own language, critical of social reality, power and inequalities, with a unique and deep relationship with its audience.
“By virtue of the originality of his work, his contribution to culture and critical thinking, and his impact on the production of collective meanings that are part of the country’s symbolic heritage, the University of Buenos Aires decided to grant him this distinction. Carlos Alberto Solari is one of the most influential figures in Argentine popular music. His artistic and cultural career has consolidated him as an unavoidable reference in national rock and contemporary culture,” the statement underlined.
