The statistical probability of love at first sightthe plot of the movie

After missing the flight from New York to London, Hadley (Haley Lu Richardson) meets young Oliver (Ben Hardy) by chance, and the two immediately hit it off. The girl is traveling to the English capital to attend her father’s (Rob Delaney) second wedding to a woman she doesn’t know, and perhaps it’s no coincidence that she arrived late at check-in. Oliver, on the other hand, studies at Yale and has to return to London for reasons he doesn’t want to reveal.

After boarding, the two find themselves sitting close together and the long night they spend together on the plane passes in the blink of an eye. Also thanks to an unexpected chemistry that is established from the first minutes.

Upon landing at Heathrow the two are forced to separate, finding each other in the confusion seems impossible. However, the boy leaves his phone number to Hadley, only for Hadley’s phone to run out of battery before memorizing the number. Plus she has to rush to her father’s wedding and doesn’t have time to wait for Oliver at the exit. After the ceremony, he remembers that Oliver had to go to a theater in Peckham, and so he gets on a bus to join him. Upon arrival, the girl discovers the real reason for Oliver’s return to London, and that love, sometimes, really is just around the corner. And that perhaps can last a lifetime.

A modern and non-trivial romcom

Based on the popular novel of the same name by Jennifer E. Smithreleased in 2011, the film is an enchanting romantic comedy created by the same producers of the franchise All the times I wrote I love you. A film that successfully renews the tradition of the romantic comedy abringing substantial innovations both in the narrative structure and in the contents.

Accompanied by the narrative voice of Jameela Jamil – which appears as a common thread in several small roles –, the film travels back and forth on the coordinates of time over the course of a single, intense day. Taking from time to time the point of view of the two young protagonists.

In reminding us that timing is everything and that sometimes true love is found in the most unexpected places, the film also differs from very similar products in terms of the themes it addresses. In fact, there is not only the story of love at first sight but also the story of two families who find themselves in a difficult moment and with which the two boys will necessarily have to learn to deal. In fact, if for Hadley the trip to London is initially marked by the regret and hatred she has towards her father’s choice, for Oliver it will instead be about facing an imminent death. That is, that of the beloved mother.

And it is precisely in the rejection of a dreamy and unrealistic story that The statistical probability of love at first sight he succeeds in his aim. That is to show the viewer how commitment and sharing is actually needed in tragic and difficult moments to make a relationship truly work (and not just butterflies in the stomach).
