The Slow Show: “Subtle Love” (review & stream)

The Manchester quartet rarely touches on Tindersticks pastiche. Rather, his style range is expanded and concentrated at the same time. Big emphasis? Still, but they know when things will be okay again. Upscale emo-pop unfolds almost reservedly in ten never-redundant songs. “Royal Blue” exposes itself in a 2:28 trad folk setting, the anthemic “One Shot” immediately counteracts it.

Tricky thing about love

The title track is an ode to love (not just the subtle kind). “Builder Boy” (guest production: Joshua Burnside) moves love in times of depression. And Rob Goodwin’s baritone also sings: “I will take the blame if we let it slip away.” Does it help to think about the end at the beginning? Tricky thing, the thing about love.
