The Leverkusen top star is already in the world class category. But his older sister also inherited a lot of ball talent.
Florian Wirtz is just 21 years old and is already one of the most sought-after professionals in all of Europe. After winning the double with Bayer Leverkusen in May, he was also one of the outstanding players in the German team at the home European Championships in the summer.
In the current season, Wirtz continued to draw attention to himself with strong performances in the Champions League. His market value is currently estimated at 140 million euros, making him, together with his friend and congenial partner Jamal Musiala, the most valuable German professional.
But he is not the only one in his family who is blessed with a great deal of feeling for the ball. His sister Juliane, who is almost two years older, also plays Bundesliga football.
The defender has been under contract with Werder Bremen since 2023, where she was immediately voted player of the season in a fan survey last season. Before that, she went through the same stages as her even more famous brother. It all started at the local club Grün-Weiß Braunweiler just outside Cologne. While she was still a junior, she moved to the big “Effzeh” in the cathedral city (2011), where she celebrated her debut in the women’s Bundesliga in February 2018.
In the summer of 2018, Wirtz joined the then first division promoted Leverkusen, where she scored two goals in 89 league games. Bremen has been around for about a year and a half now.
Juliane has also already gained international experience. She played for the DFB national teams between the U15 and U19 levels. Her highlight: the runner-up title at the U19 European Championships 2019 in Scotland.
What helped her on the way to becoming a top footballer? The competition with boys. “In primary school and with Flori in the club, I often played against and with boys. And they probably saw that I could kick well. In any case, I didn’t put up with anything,” said Juliane in an interview with “Kicker” at the end of December 2023.
Florian and Juliane have eight other siblings. Five come from dad Hans’s first marriage, three from mom Karin’s first marriage. Although “only” Juliane and Florian made it to professional athletes, everyone was enthusiastic about sports from an early age. Juliane reported it in the same interview: “We used to play together all the time, whether in the living room or on the football field – our father sometimes trained us.”
And what is your relationship with your brother like today? “Because of my move to Werder, we are now further apart, but we talk to each other very often. It’s a familiar relationship,” said Juliane.
Juliane has no problems with the fact that her younger brother is now in the spotlight and she is usually referred to as “sister of…”: “He’s very well known – so it’s a bit human that for a lot of people What’s special is having Flori as a brother. But for me he’s just my little brother who I used to look after.”
Although she admits: “Nevertheless, there are of course moments when you think: It doesn’t have to be the case that my brother is becoming an issue again.”
Despite his world career, he is still at least as interested in her games as she is in his. “He writes to me after every game he sees me about what he thought of it,” the 23-year-old recently revealed to “Stadtmagazin Bremen”.
In the end, however, she was condemned to watch. In November she tore ligaments in her ankle and has been out ever since. She wants to celebrate her comeback in the spring.
