The Senate is booming silent about the attack on the policewoman

BZ columnist Gunnar Schupelius on the arson attack on the car of a police officer from LKA Berlin and the lack of reaction from the Senate.

On the night of May 24, the private car of an officer from the Berlin State Criminal Police Office was set on fire in Schönefeld. The car burned out completely, another vehicle was badly damaged.

The 53-year-old policewoman had been in a leading position against left-wing extremists. In March, she was summoned to appear in court as a witness when a militant demonstrator on Rigaer Strasse was being tried.

On an illegal website of left-wing extremists on the Internet, the arsonists wrote that they only wanted to cause property damage, but could also hit the officer “physically and more directly”. They released their name and home address.

The state chairman of the police union (GdP), Stephan Weh, wrote to the journalists: “We expect that Berlin’s politicians will show their colors here and name this terrorism as such.”

However, the Senate did not react at all. No known color, the terror was not named. Not a word from the Governing Mayor Giffey (SPD) and her representatives Jarasch (Greens) and Lederer (Left). Not a word from SPD leader Saleh, not a word from the Greens and the Left.

Only the SPD deputy Tom Schreiber spoke up, who has been pointing out the violence against police officers for many years. As is well known, he is prevented from rising in his own party.

And so weighty voices could only be heard from the opposition condemning the crime. CDU leader Kai Wegner spoke of an “abyss of misanthropy and contempt for democracy”. The FDP MP Björn Jotzo called for “a consensus against left-wing extremism”, which has failed in the House of Representatives since 2016 because of the Left, Greens and SPD.

The silence of the governing mayor and the senators is conspicuous, booming, as the saying goes, so it cannot be overheard. It’s almost worse than the arson attack itself, because suddenly it becomes crystal clear how little the governing politicians in this city want to stand behind the police and how much they shy away from left-wing violence on the streets.

It can’t get any worse than now: a female officer is spied on, her private life is being followed, her address is posted on the internet, her car is set on fire, calls for further persecution and threatens to use violence against herself and her colleagues.

An example was set: This is how all officials investigating left-wing extremists should be treated. And that is exactly why the chorus of the ruling politicians should have started here to show that they want to fight terror and will fight it and want to defend the democratic state that is to be attacked and is being attacked. This silence is a pathetic, dangerous failure that will take bitter revenge.
