The Scheldt is more polluted with plastic than the North Sea

For the first time, the impact of climate change and litter is being thoroughly mapped out.

All week long, day and night, hard work has been done on board the Ostend fleet ship Simon Stevin. Over a period of 5 days, the impact of climate change and plastic pollution in coastal and river waters was investigated. Important conclusions are already that a river like the Scheldt is more polluted with plastic than the North Sea itself, but that the Scheldt is not necessarily the source of plastic in the sea and on our beaches. The fact that the majority of all plastic on the beaches comes from the rivers would therefore be less true than often thought.
