The members of The Rolling Stones still do not lack work ethic after six decades. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood – now aged 82, 82 and 78 – recorded fourteen new songs in less than a month in a studio in London.

Fans and collectors have already gotten a taste of the opening song in recent weeks Rough & Twistedwhich could only be heard on vinyl. This song was also released digitally on Tuesday evening, together with the new single Into the stars.

Foreign Tongues is the band’s 25th album and follows the critically acclaimed album Hackney Diamonds from 2023. Special on the new album is a performance by Charlie Watts, the Stones drummer who died five years ago. One of his last recording sessions before his death in 2021 can be heard.

Once again the Stones collaborate with other rock icons, this time with Steve Winwood, Paul McCartney, Robert Smith of The Cure and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Mick Jagger: ‘Very intense weeks’

According to Mick Jagger came Foreign Tongues was created during an exceptionally creative period. “It was a very intense week,” the frontman says of the fast-paced recording sessions. “We had fourteen great tracks and we went as fast as we could. You could feel the passion of everyone.”

Guitarist Ronnie Wood also felt inspired: “The atmosphere was so creative and the whole band was in top form throughout the entire process. Very often we got it in the first take. I hope everyone will love it.”

Guitarist Keith Richards, who has lived in America for many years, said it was ‘great’ to be back in London for work. “For me it’s all about fun. I’m blessed to be able to do this and hopefully I can do it for a long time.” Record label Universal Music is not mentioning a possible European tour. This would be too heavy, especially for Richards.

Mysterious posters

Diehard fans were drawn into a sophisticated marketing campaign full of hints last month. The search for the Stones’ new music started with mysterious posters of ‘The Cockroaches’. This was the pseudonym that The Rolling Stones used in 1977 for a legendary surprise performance in Toronto.

Anyone who deciphered the hints could – if you were quick enough – buy one of the thousand LPs containing the single last month. Rough & Twisted.

The unique edition cost 10 euros and 7 cents, which – as it now turns out – was a nod to the album’s release date: July 10.

Foreign Tongues is released by record label Polydor/Universal Music and produced by Andrew Watt. This producer was also involved Hackney Diamonds and has also worked in the past with Pearl Jam, Justin Bieber and Iggy Pop, among others.
