The prosecutor wants to suspend Ajax player Berghuis for three matches for an FC Twente fan blow

Ajax player Steven Berghuis is facing a penalty of three suspended matches, one of which is conditional. On the way to the team bus, after the defeat against FC Twente, the attacker could not contain his anger and made a striking move towards a Twente supporter.

The professional football prosecutor finds the action in violation of the rules and codes of conduct for players, but also takes into account the supporter’s “grossly offensive statements”. That is why the prosecutor wants to suspend professional football Berghuis three games, one of which is conditional.

Although it is not yet known why Berghuis dealt the blow, the NOS rather that he stood up for his fellow player Brian Brobbey who was hurled racist insults.

Together with an earlier suspension, due to his fifth yellow card, Berghuis will probably miss the first three league games of the next season.

Regret

Berghuis was previously fined by Ajax for the incident. He also said the same evening that he regretted the blow. “I regret my action, I should not have done this,” Berghuis said in a press statement. “After every away game we get a lot of curses thrown at us at the bus, while we make time to sign autographs to fans who ask for it.”

“I’m used to it now, but people think they can shout anything. My reaction doesn’t solve anything, I understand that too. It’s not good, I have an exemplary function as an Ajax player.”

Berghuis has until Monday, June 12 to respond to the prosecutor’s settlement proposal. If he does not agree, the disciplinary committee will consider this matter.
