The Prosecutor General’s Office is preparing amendments to the legislation in the field of traffic cameras in order to make the procedure for canceling erroneous fines more convenient, informs “Kommersant” with reference to the department.

We are talking about amendments to the law “On highways and road activities”, which will allow the cancellation of such fines without the appeal of injured drivers. Now, without them or the protest of the prosecutor’s office, the traffic police does not have the right to do so.

In 2021, regional prosecutors checked the operation of automatic fixation complexes. They found that cameras are often “used not to prevent violations, but to generate additional income for regional authorities and entrepreneurs,” the Prosecutor General’s Office said.

In Buryatia, Dagestan, the Krasnodar Territory, the Irkutsk and Moscow regions, prosecutors found cameras installed “outside the places of concentration of accidents,” the department said. In the Nizhny Novgorod region, in a few days, the traffic police with the help of cameras issued more than 6.5 thousand fines for speeding, the total amount exceeded 4.2 million rubles. In fact, there were no violations, but the complex determined the speed incorrectly, since it was incorrectly fixed. All fines were subsequently cancelled.
