Oncologist: Coronavirus could become a ‘trigger’ for the development of lung cancer

Inflammation due to coronavirus can become a “trigger” that can lead to the development of an oncological process, but this is “not a fact.” There is currently no evidence that COVID survivors are more likely to develop lung cancer.

Significant damage to the lungs as a result of a severe COVID-19 coronavirus infection in some cases can lead to the appearance of malignant neoplasms, “but whether this is further realized in the development of lung cancer is not at all a fact.” About it on the air of “Radio Russia” declared Deputy Director of the Institute of Clinical Oncology of the Center. N. N. Blokhina, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Konstantin Laktionov.

The professor noted that inflammatory changes in the body are accompanied by a higher activity of cell division. Therefore, according to Laktionov, some chronic inflammatory changes in the lungs can be a “trigger” that can lead to the development of an oncological process.

“Of course, our oncological alertness is now at its height,” the professor said and pointed out the need to monitor patients who had severe COVID-19.

Laktionov stressed that the oncological process is not an outbreak, and by the time doctors detect it, “this process has already existed for several months, and maybe even half a year at least.” The specialist pointed out the importance of annual clinical examination.
