Fernando arrives in Baku with hope after his seventh place in Monaco, his best result so far this season
“At the beginning of the course we were more competitive, but we did not add points due to reliability problems, mistakes and bad luck”, he values
After finishing seventh in the Monaco Grand Prix, his best result so far this season, Fernando Alonso was quite optimistic this Friday at the press conference prior to the first practice sessions of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Asturian driver, who is debuting new pontoons on the Baku street circuit, has analyzed his possibilities for this weekend and has recalled that on a track with these characteristics, anything is possible.
Alonso has pointed out that Alpine came to be very close to Ferrari and Red Bull in some race weekends at the beginning of the season, but the car’s reliability issues left them unrewarded: “I think at the beginning of the season we were more competitive, but we didn’t score points because of reliability issues, mistakes and bad luck. In Australia we were close to Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes, but now they are a bit far away. Maybe we are not in that position or we don’t deserve to fight for the podium, maybe our current position is seventh.”
Despite this, Fernando does not rule out anything for this weekend: “The podium? Well, let’s see, I think in Baku the races are very special, with many things that happen. It is a street race, yes, but here Saturday may not be the priority, it is more the pace for Sunday and to be attentive to any opportunity that may arise with safety cars or red flags. So yeah, nothing is impossible.”
“We all want some action on Sunday. It’s a very distinctive racing circuit. Normally the cars suffer a lot of damping in Monaco, Singapore and circuits like that, but here we all come with a very low car that causes errors and gives the race a spectacle.” , has valued Alonsowho after seven Grands Prix is thirteenth in the drivers’ standings with a total of 10 points, 20 less than his teammate Stephen Ocon.
