Warm weather and summer events got people moving over the weekend, which was particularly reflected in the number of coastal cities of the Ostrobothnia Police Department.
The Bigday Festival in Vaasa employed police. Especially on Saturday night, the police had several duties of disturbance, vandalism and violence. The Seinäjoki Tango Market and the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival, on the other hand, went smoothly.
Substance abuse as the main cause of unrest
– The events this weekend clearly often repeated the same phenomenon: alcohol was associated with many police alarm missions, whether it is disruptive behavior, assault, or drunk driving in traffic. Indeed, substance abuse is often a major factor behind violence and disruption, says Commissioner of the Surveillance and Alarm Sector Antti Kola From the Ostrobothnian Police Department.
A total of 17 drivers suspected of drunk driving were left in the wounds of the police. Two cases were associated with drugs; Nine of the cases were gross drunk driving. The suspects were widely reached from all over the Ostrobothnia Police Department, from more than ten different municipalities.
Throughout the weekend, almost 60 people were arrested by the police who had committed a crime, causing disruption, endangering their own or others’ safety. About one third of those arrested were on a criminal basis. The rest with the rest of the public order and security of the Police Act.
Events are taken into account
– Generally speaking, the Ostrobothnian Police Department is preparing for the control of general order and safety, regardless of the season. Larger audience events for summer weekends are taken into account in the design of work and resources, especially, the Commissioner says.
Kola emphasizes effective cooperation with event organizers and their security organizations. Once the events are well planned and the security arrangements are functional, the police can focus more effectively and more extensively on other general order and safety and traffic control.
