The order of the factors, by Rafael Jorba

Pedro Sánchez strung together his initial speech knowing that the order of the factors does not alter the product, but it does alter the story. The desired result is the investiturebut the dilemma he posed is summarized like this: “Either democracy gives security or insecurity will end democracy”, “retrograde right” or “progressive forces.” Said in the negative, he put the bandage before the wound that Alberto Núñez Feijóo later poked at: it is not amnesty for investiture but rather progress or setback.

Only then did he develop the axes of the coalition program with Sumar. The amnesty was the penultimate one he addressed, in “the name of Spain and concord.” He did not present the measure of grace as an end, but as a means to “advance the agenda of reunion”: “In discord there can be no prosperity.” The two items with which she gilded the pill: concord (Cambó) and forgiveness (Azaña) from an idea of ’patriotism’ – “knowing ourselves linked to each other” – and how the unity of Spain is best guaranteed: “From the dialogue” or the “PP recipe that led to disaster.”

Sánchez showed his respect for the “opinions and emotions” of those protesting in the street and, once again, altered the order of the factors: The problem of the PP is that it does not accept the result of 23J and the rules of the game of parliamentary democracy. And a final proclamation in the key of civic patriotism: “I believe in Spain, I believe in our citizens, I believe in the enormous potential of this country.” Núñez Feijóoin his reply as leader of the PP, showed the wounds that the bandage in Sánchez’s initial speech was intended to hide, but did not propose an alternative therapy.

From this perspective, the debate did not draw a Congress faced by the ideological axis, between right and left, but by the territorial axis, seasoned with identity and emotional overtones. Núñez Feijóo was not entirely right when he said that Sánchez’s speech was the reply that he did not make at his failed investiture, but it is also true that did not provide alternative measure some to those pointed out by Sánchez: “Today was not a speech, it was a delirium“; this investiture “was born from a fraud”, materialized in Waterloo; “an exercise in political corruption.”

Sánchez resumed his initial speech, brandishing the credit of their alliances in the face of Núñez Feijóo’s deficit in this field and raised a question that was not answered: what the PP proposes for Catalonia. In short, a mix of disqualifications, with a phrase by Núñez Feijóo for the newspaper archive: “Mr. Abascal is demonstrating more height of state than you.” A digression in the analysis: I will not comment on Vox’s speech: democratic cordon. Yes I will do it from Gabriel Rufián, from ERC: he has passed his parliamentary majority with flying colors. This is not yet the case of Míriam Nogueras, from Junts: she is where Rufián was four years ago.

With these coordinates, Sánchez will pass the revalidation today. His task will be not only to sew Catalonia back together, but overcome the fracture between the two Spains that has been opened in the streets and that is now reflected in Parliament: illuminate a third Spainnot a combatant, but a peacemaker and reconstructor, in the words of Gaziel.
