The emergency shelter at the Nestel on the Tichelrijt industrial estate in Dongen remains open until August 31 from 2027. The Dongen city council decided on Thursday during an additional council meeting. Residents had started a petition at the end of last year to keep the shelter open for longer.
The municipality of Dongen still receives money from the Ministry of Asylum and Migration, so that the emergency shelter for asylum seekers at the Nestel can remain open. The daycare now does not have to be closed on July 1, but can therefore continue to run up to and including the summer of 2027.
At the end of last year, the city council decided that the shelter could remain open for longer, after residents asked for it en masse. A petition to keep the shelter open was signed more than a thousand times.
