The Movies in Amsterdam is open again: “Our patience is rewarded”

The Movies on the Haarlemmerdijk is open again after a closure of almost three years. And that makes both visitors and employees very happy. AT5 took a look at the renovated oldest cinema in Amsterdam.

The closure of almost three years had several causes. First, the cinema had to close again and again because of corona, then the renovation took two years. “During the renovation, it turned out that many walls were too bad. They were about to collapse,” explains director Alex Rutten. As a result, the renovation took even longer than planned. But since this week the doors have been opened to the public again. “Our patience is rewarded,” said a visitor.

Anyone who has been to The Movies before will recognize room 1, despite the renovation. The Art Deco tapestries, the ceiling, red chairs… The other rooms, on the other hand, have undergone a major overhaul. For example, the number of seats in room 2 has been reduced from 90 to 42 seats. Everything to optimize the ‘viewing experience’.
