“After the war we hardly had anything left. The Miss Zandvoort election came as a gift,” says Thea. At that time she has been in Zandvoort for twenty years, is about 1.75 meters long and with her dark blonde curls a very handsome appearance.
“But as green as grass, you know. I wanted to participate, but not for the prizes. VOOr the joke and especially for the bathing suit you got. You were happy that there was finally something fun to do again. “
Far too large bathing suits
Thea doesn’t have much competition that Sunday afternoon. There are eight participants. Some from Amsterdam. But also a few from Zandvoort. “The girl of the shoe store, for example,” she still remembers.
The 17-year-old Mimi Kok is also present that day. She is the daughter of the eponymous, nationally famous actress. The ladies in wooden changing rooms on the beach do change clothes. They get beautiful bathing suits from the organization. “I got a black and white one. They looked quite luxurious,” she says.
But no matter how luxurious the bathing suits seem, they are not really comfortable. “Far too big. It was still reasonable at the front, but it didn’t look at the back.”
