The Masked Singer stuns with score against Orange: ‘Huh?!’

The Football World Cup may score lower viewing figures than ever with the edition in Qatar, but no one expected The Masked Singer to hold up so well against the Orange yesterday.

The nerve-racking quarter-final between the Netherlands and Argentina at the World Cup in Qatar attracted no fewer than 5.6 million viewers (77 percent market share) to NPO 1 last night. show The Masked Singer how Loiza Lamers came out of a mermaid suit.

Widespread bewilderment

Despite the well-watched football, The Masked Singer still managed to appeal to 819 thousand viewers (11 percent), making it by far the most watched alternative to Orange. RTL Boulevard star Luuk Ikink is completely surprised: “5.6 million for football and still 800k for The Masked Singer. I had gambled 400k,” he says.

And viewing figure connoisseur Tina Nijkamp is also hers by the way. “It is striking and remarkable that The Masked Singer scores no less than 819 thousand viewers against the Dutch national team. Really gigantic high. Never before has an entertainment program scored so well against the Dutch national team at a World Cup, in my opinion.”

‘How is this possible?’

Tina points out that the World Cup is also viewed much less than average. “What disappointing numbers. Only 5.6 million viewers linearly saw how the Netherlands lost to Argentina yesterday in a real thriller quarterfinal. This is the lowest viewed quarter-final of the Dutch national team ever.”

According to her, it is anyway the worst watched European Championship or World Cup tournament for the Dutch national team in history. “In 2010, the Orange scored 7 million viewers with the World Cup quarterfinals and in 2014 even 7.5 million viewers. And yes, people watch less linearly, but then again: one year ago even the eighth final scored more at 6 p.m.…”

‘It lives less’

What does that mean according to Tina? “Perhaps not only that the tournament takes place in winter instead of summer and in Sinterklaas time and Christmas time, but perhaps also that it really is less alive than other tournaments.”

With 2 for 12 (627 thousand and 8 percent), NPO 2 also scored reasonably well against football, but SBS 6 really dropped completely: the All-rounder VIPS rerun attracted only 95 thousand viewers (1 percent), after which Shownieuws had 57 thousand ( 0.7 percent) left.
