The majority of football fans do not want to follow the women’s Bundesliga more intensively

Clear survey result: The successful performance of the European Championship by the German women’s soccer team will probably not trigger a boom in the Bundesliga.

Not much was missing for a really big sensation. The German women’s national soccer team lost 2-1 after extra time in the final of the European Championship to hosts England. Few observers had predicted before the tournament that the team of national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg would come so close to winning the ninth title.

But the team around captain Alexandra Popp impressed with consistent and efficient football and rode their own wave of euphoria into the final at Wembley. On the way there, the DFB women broke record after record. A good 18 million people in Germany watched the game against England live on television.

Only a third of football fans want to follow the women’s Bundesliga

However, the European Championship will probably only have a positive effect on the fundamental attractiveness of women’s football in Germany among a few fans. At least that is the result of a survey by the opinion research institute Civey on behalf of t-online.

The question “Are you planning to follow the women’s Bundesliga more closely after this year’s European Women’s Soccer Championship?” 51 percent – and thus the absolute majority – of the 1,519 football fans surveyed answered no. More than a quarter of those questioned even ruled this out categorically, opting for the option “No, absolutely not” (28 percent).
