The Maas Bridge between Gennep and Oeffelt will be closed from Monday morning to Friday evening because Rijkswaterstaat will repair the bridge. Cars, agricultural traffic and public transport must take a detour. Only cyclists and emergency services can cross the bridge.
The bridge will be closed from Monday morning at 7 a.m. to Friday, March 6, at 5 p.m. Saturday March 21 is a reserve day for extra work. If this day is not necessary, the bridge remains open. Rijkswaterstaat will repair the damage caused after an excavator collided with the bridge in March last year.
An auxiliary structure was placed in October 2025 to help the bridge through the storm season, but now it is time for complete repairs so that the bridge is completely safe again.
During the closure, traffic will be diverted as follows:
- Cars and passenger transport detour via the south and cross the Maas via the A77. The travel time will be 10 minutes longer.
- Agricultural traffic takes a detour via the ferry at Afferden. The travel time will be 1 hour longer.
- The bus from Gennep runs via the A77 to the Maasziekenhuis in Beugen.
- A replacement bus runs between Oeffelt and the Maasziekenhuis during the day.
During the repair, Rijkswaterstaat will install a drive-through structure for cyclists: a kind of roof that protects against falling materials. This makes the cycle path eight centimeters narrower. There will be additional light points so that everyone can continue cycling safely. Cyclists may sometimes have to wait up to ten minutes while hoisting materials.
After the closure, one lane will be open from March 6 to May 17. Temporary traffic lights regulate traffic. Road users must take additional travel time into account. A complete closure of five days will follow in April and May.
