The construction of eight starter homes on the site of the former De Lindelaar primary school in Westerbork has started. The terraced houses form the final part of the housing project, which went differently than planned.
Last year, thirty candidates registered for the project, and the eight homes were allocated after a draw. Most of the lucky ones come from Westerbork. Together the construction plan was designed and a construction company was sought. Today they put the shovel in the ground to kick off construction.
Initially, the municipality of Midden-Drenthe focused on selling the building land to a company. The builder would then have to meet the municipality’s conditions, because the focus was on ‘social owner-occupied homes’. It was not possible to find a company that wanted to participate. That is why they switched to plan B: setting up a trial with the village in which the future residents themselves take the initiative.
The homes are expected to be ready next September. There will be a total of 21 homes on the site of De Lindelaar. In addition to the terraced houses, there are eight social rental properties and five detached houses.
