The Leek town hall site will be transformed into a sustainable residential area with 72 homes

The site of the town hall in Tolberterstraat in Leek is being redeveloped into a sustainable residential area with 72 homes. Construction will start in mid-2025.

The mayor and aldermen decided this on Tuesday. The 72 homes include 33 social rental apartments, which will be located in De Oude Ulo. Furthermore, 20 homes will be built that will cost less than 355,000 euros. The homes are built energy-efficiently and sustainably – by using existing, sustainable materials and responsible producers.

Part of the Nienoord Estate

The sale procedure of the municipal buildings on the site on Tolberterstraat – town hall, messenger house, Oude Ulo and field service location with outbuildings – was kicked off in March. Eleven parties showed interest, five companies were allowed to submit a concrete plan.

A group of experts assessed these plans based on predetermined conditions, in which the plan Klein Nienoord of the Nijhuis-Explorius combination came out on top. This plan provides for the realization of ‘a residential area in a large green landscape room – the residential area will again become part of the Nienoord Estate – with a mix of original buildings and new homes’.

“I am extremely satisfied with the winning plan,” councilor Bert Nederveen said in a press release. ‘It offers a wide range of owner-occupied homes in different price ranges and social rental apartments. It is a beautiful location. The Huize Klein Nienoord, which is to be restored, will soon become a beautiful eye-catcher for this new residential area.’

Town hall open until mid-2024

Nijhuis-Explorius expects to start the demolition and construction work on De old ULO at the end of 2024. The construction of the owner-occupied homes and the restoration of Huize Klein Nienoord will follow in mid-2025.

The town hall in Leek will remain open at least until mid-2024. After that there will be one town hall in Zuidhorn.
