“The Last of Us” is one of the most discussed and popular video games of recent years. HBO is now making a series out of it – and surprisingly quickly.
The 2013 survival horror game “The Last of Us” by Naughty Dogs is about an unlikely father-daughter-like duo traveling together in a dystopian world. Due to the enormous success, “The Last of Us Part II” was released in 2019, which continues the impressive story. The broadcaster HBO, known among other things for “Game of Thrones”, is now releasing the series of the same name. This is based on the first part of the game and will probably come much earlier than long assumed.
The Last of Us series will be released in early 2023
Completely surprisingly, HBO announced the start of its long-awaited “The Last of Us” series for mid-January 2023. In the USA, the premiere will be on January 15th on HBO Max. In Germany you can already see the first episode on the night of January 16th, 2023. Like most other HBO productions, the series runs on Sky and the streaming service Wow.
This data had already been leaked shortly before the official announcement. The culprit was the probably accidentally placed date in the broadcaster’s own app. It is the first video game adaptation by HBO, but it has already had many successful series. These include the sci-fi series “Westworld”, the award-winning “Euphoria” and “Succession”. And of course the most successful series in recent years: “Game of Thones” (and the spin-off “House of the Dragon”).

The series should be based on the first part of the game “The Last of Us” and thus tell the common journey of the two protagonists Joel and Ellie. In 2013, a highly contagious fungal plague nearly wiped out humanity. Breathing in the spores will transform you into a zombie-like mutant in no time. The same goes for anyone bitten by these mutants.
Only 14-year-old Ellie developed immunity after being bitten. So Texan Joel is on a mission to take her across the country to a facility to develop a cure using Ellie’s own mutation. Along the way, the grumpy smuggler and the cheeky orphan girl grow together.
Ellie and Joel are prominently cast with Bella Ramsey (including “Game of Thrones”, “His Dark Materials”) and Pedro Pascal (including “Kingsman 2”, “The Mandalorian”). Also featured are Gabriel Luna as Joel’s brother Tommy and Merle Dandridge as rebel leader Marlene. The trailer that was released in September also gives hope for a visually stunning series that is clearly based on the video game template.
