The Stockholm Peace Research Institute Sipri (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute) publishes a detailed ranking of the world’s largest armaments companies every year. Only sales from the military sector flow into the evaluation – i.e. income from the production and sale of weapons, military equipment and defense services.
The latest data for 2023 show that the global weapons market is still dominated by US corporations. But companies from China, Europe and Russia also play an important role. German armaments giants such as Renk, Hensoldt & Co. are not among the top ten. The largest German armaments group Rheinmetall was only 26th in 2023 with an arms turnover of $ 5.5 billion.

11th place: the ranking
The current ranking of the world’s largest armaments groups was created by the Stockholm Peace Research Institute Sipri. Only sales from the military business in 2023 – income from the sale of weapons, military equipment and services close to defense were assessed. The data comes from publicly accessible business reports and government sources.

10th place: China Electronics Technology Group
The China Electronics Technology Group (CETC) focuses on electronic warfare, radar systems and military communication technology. The high degree of digitization and the role as a central supplier to China’s army make CETC a technological backbone of Chinese defense policy. CETC recorded sales of $ 16.1 billion in 2023 and thus landed in tenth worldwide.

9th place: Norinco
Norinco (China North Industries Group) is a leader in tanks, artillery and weapons for floor troops. The group exports primarily to emerging countries. Even if Norinco is strongly geared towards the internal market, the Chinese company achieved sales of $ 20.6 billion in 2023 and thus ends up in the 9th place in the global top 10.

8th place: Avic
The Aviation Industry Corporation of China is the backbone of Chinese airwaffic modernization. The group develops combat aircraft, vans and drones. The high state investment in national defense ensures Avic a prominent role in an international comparison, which also proves annual turnover 2023 of $ 20.9 billion.

7th place: Rostec
The Russian state company Rostec, which bundles numerous armaments companies – including the arms manufacturer Kalashnikow and the aircraft manufacturer Suchoi. Despite western sanctions, Rostec remains an important player who equips the Russian army with technology, ammunition and aircraft, which earned sales of $ 21.7 billion in 2023.

6th place: Bae Systems
Bae Systems is Europe’s largest armaments group and delivers fighter jets, ships, ammunition and defense electronics. In 2023, the group recorded sales of $ 29.8 billion through large orders from the United Kingdom, the USA and Saudi Arabia.

5th place: General Dynamics
General Dynamics is known for his combat tanks (M1 Abrams), atomic submarines and IT systems for the military. The group is one of the largest suppliers of the US armed forces and benefits from rising defense spending. In 2023, international orders also secured annual sales of $ 30.2 billion and thus 5th place in the ranking.

4th place: Boeing
Although Boeing is fighting turbulence in the civil aviation area, the “Defense, Space & Security” division remains stable. Transport planes, satellites and the F/A-18 program contributed to sales of $ 31.1 billion in the 2023 armaments business. Boeing secures a place in the top 5.

3rd place: Northrop Grumman
Northrop Grumman is one of the most important technology groups in the US armaments industry. With the B-21 star cap bomber, rocket defense systems and drones, the group is driving the modernization of the US forces. The high focus on top-of-the-military focus in 2023 earned sales of $ 35.6 billion.

2nd place: RTX
The armaments specialist RTX, emerged from the merger of Raytheon and United Technologies, primarily provides rocket systems and air defense solutions such as the Patriot system. The strong demand in the course of global security policy tensions ensures the group with sales in 2023 of $ 40.6 billion second place.

1st place: Lockheed Martin
Lockheed Martin remains unchallenged at the head of the global armaments market with sales of $ 60.8 billion in 2023. The company benefits massively from long-term major orders from the US government, especially for the F-35 fight jet program. Around 96 percent of total sales are due to military products. Lockheed is also a leader in the areas of rocket defense and satellite technology – a clear reason for top positioning.
