Peskov about the negotiations with the US on NATO: “So far there is nothing to say about the result”

In negotiations on security guarantees with NATO, it is not the process that is important, but the result, said the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov. So far, according to him, the result does not inspire optimism

Moscow sees no reason for optimism after the talks on security guarantees held the day before by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and Deputy State Department Head Wendy Sherman in Geneva. This was announced to reporters by the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov, RBC correspondent reports.

“So far, let’s say, we do not see any significant reason for optimism. The way these negotiations were held deserves a positive assessment, ”Peskov said.

He also added that what is important is the result of these negotiations, and “not process for the sake of process.” “So far there is nothing to say about the result. There are a few more rounds ahead of us to get a clearer understanding of where we are with the Americans. It is still impossible to draw any conclusions, “says Peskov.

Sherman and Ryabkov met in Geneva on January 10 and 11. Speaking about their results, both Ryabkov and his counterpart assessed the conversation as honest and frank. However, on the main demand of Russia – guarantees that NATO will not expand to the east and that weapons will not be deployed in countries bordering on Russia – the parties did not come to an agreement.

Where did Russia and the United States agree at the talks in Geneva?
