The Kick-off: realistic Telstar aims for top 25

Already in 2018, Telstar expressed the ambition to play in the Premier League in 2026. Although the club almost reached the play-offs for promotion to the Premier League last season, a step to the highest professional level is still far away. According to the new general manager Leon Annokkée, it is also unrealistic. “We must do everything we can to reach the top 25 in the Netherlands,” Annokkée says on TV tonight in the football talk show De Aftrap.

Annokkée succeeded the eccentric Pieter de Waard at the end of last season. The former ING man does not think he is setting the bar too low. “With a bit of realism, I think that the Premier League is a few steps too far. Of course you want to compete as high as possible, but Top 25 means that you regularly have to play at the top of the first division. That is not possible in one go.” Telstar currently occupies the penultimate place in the first division.

“You have to deal with the limits of the budget compared to other clubs”

Former national coach Guus Hiddink

Tablemate Guus Hiddink agrees with Annokkéé “HiYou can stand up and say: ‘We are going to play the Champions League’. That is not realistic and it is also wise that he does not do that. You have to deal with the limits of the budget compared to other clubs,” said the former national coach.

Both guests will also discuss this in De Aftrap the deficit of over three million euros that FC Volendam presented yesterdaythe Champions League success of the Ajax Women and the state of the Dutch national team that can qualify for the European Championship tomorrow evening.

Despite the long list of absentees, Hiddink foresees few problems. “You can dwell on it for a long time and mourn, but that is the conclusion. You have to create a team that is competitive.”

Erik-Jan Brinkman is in Wijdewormer this time for the Kratje Trap section. ZCFC 3 trains at the Kalverhoek sports park in the same hall where AZ occasionally trains.
