According to the Yahoo News Japan portal, the best Soviet car was the VAZ-2101, popularly nicknamed “a penny”. In 1970, Soviet designers created it on the basis of the Italian Fiat 124, but adapted it for the conditions of the USSR: they installed a new engine, strengthened the body and suspension, and improved anti-corrosion protection. The model was produced until 1988, and the VAZ-2107 created on its basis – for about 20 more years.

“Overnight, the 2101 became the people’s car in Russia,” the article says.
