In judo, ranked 11th in the world heavyweight statistics Martti Puumalainen tested his fitness in the legendary Cooper’s test. The wrestler, who weighed 133 kilograms, ran around the Santahamina sports field for 2,250 meters in 12 minutes.

Puumalainen shared a summary of his run on Instagram. The man from Mikkeli was satisfied with his performance.

– Quite an okay result. Not really going to run because it’s not good for my knees. You can’t do the impossible, says Puumalainen.

Puumalainen reveals his own record of 2,850 meters. It came when I was 16 and 40 kilos lighter.

– When the weight has gone up, the result has gone down.

Puumalainen, who works as a sports non-commissioned officer in Santahamina, ran the test again the same week at the national team’s test camp in Pajulahti.

– I kind of wished I didn’t have to run again, but Roki (coach Rok Draksic) joked that I could try to improve, Puumalainen says with amusement.

Somewhat surprisingly, the result was exactly the same. Puumalainen also reveals the results of other tests. 2.50 meters was recorded in the papers for the unpaced long jump, and 220 kilos was lifted at once in the leg squat on the side of the gym.

The Puumainen’s judo season continues at the beginning of August in the Hungarian Masters invitational competition, where the best 36 in the ranking can enter. The competitor in the under-73-kilogram category also received an invitation to the competition Valtteri Olin24, who made it to Budapest through the qualifiers.

Puumalainen’s journey towards the Paris Olympics has stayed on course. The Olympic spot is not yet certain, but without a major collapse, Puumalainen will be seen on the Olympic mats next summer. The judoka herself takes her situation calmly and focuses fully on the upcoming qualifying competitions.

– Next year will be significant, but I’m not staring at the ranking, I’m focusing on getting better.
