Russia will face serious consequences if it tries to invade Ukraine, informed in an interview with the Journal du dimanche, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

“Any further attack on the territorial integrity of Ukraine will have huge consequences and lead to serious sanctions against Russia. <...> My German colleague [министр иностранных дел Германии Анналена Бербок] said: “not a step forward” – declared Le Drian (quote from Le Dauphine) and added that he fully supported it.

January 27 Burbock stated in an interview with the Funke media group that it is important for her to use channels for dialogue with Moscow. “For a long time there was no dialogue at all between Russia and NATO on how to work together for greater security. As an alliance, we gave a signal to the Russian authorities: not a step forward [на Украине]”, – she said.

According to Le Drian, France’s actions are now based on three principles: firmness in the issue of sanctions against Moscow in the event of aggression against Kiev, solidarity with Ukraine and commitment to dialogue. “As for the dialogue, we are following it closely. Our responses to Russian demands [в области гарантий безопасности] aimed at starting negotiations with Russia to establish a new order of security and stability in Europe. It is important that they are discussed,” the minister said.
