The handball players of Hurry-Up from Zwartemeer will have to deal with the bankrupt Lions in the upcoming title battle. Limburgers get their license back

The handball players of Drenth Groep Hurry-Up from Zwartemeer will have to deal with the bankrupt Lions in the battle for the Dutch championship.

The Limburg team was previously excluded from participating in the HandbalNL League for the Dutch title due to the withdrawal of its license. But Lions appealed this decision and is now allowed to participate. The licensing committee has announced this.

‘Fantastic news’

“We have received fantastic news from the licensing committee: Limburg-LIONS/HV Sittardia may participate in the HandbalNL League,” the club said. “This means that we can defend our national title, whatever else happens.” Hurry-Up from Drenthe is one of the opponents. Lions will also play in the Final4 of the BENE-League for the championship of this Belgian-Dutch competition.

Lions must pay 50,000 euros to João Ramos

The team from Sittard is bankrupt because it has to pay 50,000 euros to former player João Ramos, who previously also played for Hurry-Up in Zwartemeer. The Portuguese filed a lawsuit against the club, alleging that his employment contract had been unlawfully terminated after he suffered an injury. The judge agreed with him. The ruling caused Lions to experience major financial problems. To continue playing handball, a new foundation has been established in Limburg.
