The mistake went viral. In the middle of the speech in which Donald Trump warned that the generosity of the North American Treasury with Argentina would be maintained only if Milei wins the elections, the host said about the “four years” that the libertarian leader has been governing, according to him. That is to say, he thought that the elections on October 26 are presidential, not legislative, and that if his Argentine friend lost, he should leave power. Is that why Trump threatened to cut off promised economic aid?

It is the curious hypothesis that they propose at the top of the Mileista Government and has the particular frankness of assuming that the president of the United States is an ignorant man who is not familiar with the political situation of his allies in the Southern Cone. He is uninformed, let’s say. He doesn’t know anything, nor is he interested. And that is why he says the atrocities that we heard, which in reality would not be a warning for Milei – you had better win if you want to see the money – but for the electorate: do not vote for Peronism.

The funny hypothesis, outlined in public by characters like Daniel “El Gordo Dan” Parisisni, the leader of the government trolls, has a precedent that reinforces it: three weeks ago, when Javier and Donald met at the UN assembly in New York, it was seen that the North American also thought that this year’s Argentine elections are presidential. That is, it persists in the error. On that occasion, Trump published a fiery tweet in which he not only treated the libertarian as a “highly respected president” and “truly fantastic and powerful leader,” but also expressed his support for “re-election,” which was what he believed Milei was at stake in these elections.

Warned by the recurring confusion, in the last few hours the American tweeted that what was coming in our country was a “midterms”, a midterm or legislative election, but the embarrassment was already indelible.

In the Argentine delegation, the Minister of Economy, Luis “Toto” Caputo, tried to explain that Trump had been misunderstood and that he did not make the economic rescue subject to the electoral result, after Argentine bonds plummeted and the markets reacted with hysteria to the phrase. Because, of course, winning the elections at this point is a chimera for the Government, and the establishment senses it. Even Scott Bessent himself, the North American Secretary of the Treasury, made the same warning weeks ago: the agreement would only be fulfilled if Milei emerged victorious at the polls.

Does Trump know what is happening in Argentina? Will there be no money if there is no continuity of Milei? Misunderstanding or threat?

The truth is that, never before as now, the interference of the United States in our politics was so crude and explicit.
