The Generalitat has activated a new unit of the Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) specializing in health care in emergency situations chemical hazardlocated in ReusTarragona, and framed in the External Emergency Plan of the Chemical Sector of Tarragona (PLASEQTA).
The Department of Health has communicated that the objective is to have a unit in the territory with the capacity to give a specialized response by way of agile in the event of an emergency in an industrial establishment that handles dangerous substances in the counties of Tarragona.
The Minister of Health, Josep Maria Argimon, has highlighted that, from the health system, they must attend tall kinds of needsalthough they hope “that nothing ever happens”.
“The units that we present today are an example of being able to respond to complex and specific situations in the territory”, explained the minister.
The deployed unit has the support of the other units specialized in chemical risk that are in the base of L’Hospitalet del Llobregat and that, if necessary, they will travel to the scene of the incident, providing professionals and specialized material.

Thus, the deployment of the unit will take place in three phases which will last until mid-2023. In the initial phase It has been equipped with a light 4×4 vehicle that has a Health Emergency Technician (TES) and a nurse with specialized training in Nuclear, Radiological, Biological and Chemical (NRBC) Risk incidents.
In the second phasethere will be a logistics van with specialized material to deal with CBRN risk incidents, such as decontamination stations or mobile health areas, and a Health Emergency Technician specialized in logistics and with training in added risk will be incorporated.
in the final phasethe unit will be consolidated and the specific training of professionals will be expanded.
