The Fishermen’s Cross in Zeebrugge
Robbe is looking for the story behind it today Fisherman’s Cross in Zeebrugge† He meets fisherman Steve Savels, who has a lot to say about the monument.
The Fishermen’s Cross is a reminder of the more than 150 fishermen who lost their lives on the east coast. It was originally designed by the Bruges architect Jozef Viérin, after a proposal by Pierre Vandamme (the later Bruges aldermen and mayor). He had seen such a cross in Fécamp, where he stayed as a soldier in 1915. The Fisherman’s Cross was inaugurated in 1936. In 1941 it was blown up by the Germans, but after the liberation the cross was remade as a gift from the Belgian Concrete Company.
