The first matches of the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup are completed



The first matches of the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar have been completed.


5 of the 16 matches played in 8 groups ended in a draw. In 4 of the first group matches, where 41 goals were scored, the teams failed to air the nets.


The most different scoring victories were achieved by Spain and England. The 2010 World Cup champion Spain defeated Costa Rica 7-0, while the 1966 winner England dominated Iran 6-2.


The biggest surprise of the first matches was Saudi Arabia and Japan. While Saudi Arabia defeated Argentina 2-1, one of the favorites of the tournament, Japan managed to beat Germany with the same score.


6 players aired the nets 2 times in the first matches. Ecuador’s Fenerbahce player Enner Valencia, England’s Bukayo Saka, Iran’s Mehdi Taremi, France’s Olivier Grioud, Spain’s Ferran Torres and Brazil’s Richarlison scored 2 goals each.


Portugal’s star football player, Cristiano Ronaldo, made history as the first name to air the nets in 5 different World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022) with the goal he scored in the match they defeated Ghana 3-2.


While the referees did not apply for the red card in the mentioned matches, 56 yellow cards were shown. Only in the Germany-Japan match there was no card.
